Overview

In this 22 days long Makalu Base Camp Trek, the trekkers get a chance to discover the beautiful villages of Tibetan and Sherpa communities in the tranquil Himalayas. Also, the trekkers will trek along Arun Valley and Barun Valley which are two of the remotest parts of the country. Hence, they will get to learn about the struggle of living in these sorts of areas. Makalu Base Camp Trek also gives trekkers an opportunity to view Mt. Everest (8848m) from a unique perspective. After a tough climb to Makalu Base Camp (4870m), the trekkers will relish the alluring view of Mt. Everest (8848m), Mt. Makalu (8481m), Mt. Kanchenjunga (8586m), Lhotse (8516m), Baruntse (7129m), Chamlang (7319m), and other Himalayas in the eastern side of Nepal. Makalu Base Camp Trek also features Makalu Barun National Park, which is home to varieties of floras and faunas. Makalu Base Camp Trek is the best trek for the trekkers who seek thrills and have the guts to explore new places.

Essential Information

Visa Information

Immigration Offices, under Department of Immigration have been facilitating tourists flying to Nepal by providing Visa on Arrival. 'On Arrival' visa procedure is very quick and simple. You can expect some queues during peak Tourist season. If you wish to skip those queues, you can also consider getting Visa from Nepalese Diplomatic Missions stationed abroad prior to your arrival. Choice is yours.

 If you have obtained visa from Nepalese Diplomatic Missions, then you must enter Nepal within six months from the visa issued date. Your total stay is counted starting from the day you enter into Nepal.

Visas obtained on Arrival at the Entry and Exit points are 'Tourist Visas'.  They bear multiple Re entry facility. Tourist Visa 'On Arrival' is the only entry visa to Nepal. If you are visiting Nepal for the purposes other than Tourism (sightseeing, tour, travel, mountaineering, trekking, visiting friends and families), you should still get ' Tourist Visa' to get into the country.  However, you must change the category of visa as per your purpose and length of stay in Nepal from Department of Immigration by producing required documents.

Useful Tips:

A travel insurance policy that covers medical treatment is recommended for all tourists.
Similarly, we recommend you to make sure that the insurance covers activities such as trekking, hiking, adventure activities, rafting etc. that you will be undertaking during your stay in Nepal
Getting special vaccinations is not necessary when visiting Nepal.
We still recommend that you consult with your physician regarding special immunizing against any tropical disease.
It may be a good idea to get a complete checkup before departure.
We recommend that you undertake training programs to be physically fit if you plan to go high-altitude trekking or mountaineering when you’re visiting Nepal.
Please read up on altitude sickness (AMS) , diarrhea, Giardia, Dysentery, Cholera, Hepatitis, Rabies, Typhoid, Tetanus, Meningitis, Diphtheria, Malaria and HIV/ AIDS. Information and little precautions can often save lives.
Always make sure that your water is clean by opting for boiled and then cooled water, treated water or sealed water from a brand.
Always carry a bottle of water when trekking or venturing off away from the city/ town.
Please do not swim in lakes and water bodies, especially where depth and vegetation are not known.
Always carry and use mosquito repellant when in Terai region or during the summer.
Please have a handy medical first aid kit ready for any situation.

Itinerary

  • Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu
    Our High valley staff will be at Tribhuvan International Airport pickup and drop you at a 3-star hotel in Kathmandu briefing about this trip plan from our office. Overnight at the hotel.
  • Day 02: Full Day Sightseeing with German or English speaking Tour Guide and our staff
    We visit UNESCO World Heritage sites in Kathmandu Bhaktapur, Patan, Pashupatinath Hindu temple after sightseeing evening High valley trek organize well come Dinner at Nepali restaurant with Nepali dish and culture show dance. Overnight at the hotel.
  • Day 03: Fly from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar then drive to Chichila (1,980m/6497ft): 50 mins flight, 3-4 hour drive
    With thrills and adventures in our minds, we kick off our journey with an early morning flight to Tumlingtar. Relishing a breathtaking view of the mountains, hills, and rivers that make up the Nepalese landscape, we arrive in Tumlingtar, where we rest for an hour or two. We then drive to the Gurung village of Chichila with greenery filling up our landscape. Overnight at a lodge in Chichila.
  • Day 04: Trek from Chichila to Num (1,560m/5119ft): 6-7 hours
    On the first day of our trek, we trek through lush Himalayan forests of rhododendron and pass some beautiful small villages to reach Num. We can get a scant glimpse of the Himalayas from Num. Overnight at a lodge.
  • Day 05: Trek from Num to Seduwa (1,500m/4922 ft): 6-7 hours
    Crossing a wooden bridge over Barun River, we enter the Makalu Barun Conservation Area. Our guide will deal with all kinds of legal permits for the trek. We trek through dense forests of juniper and rhododendron passing few villages to finally reach Seduwa. Overnight in a lodge.
  • Day 06: Trek from Seduwa to Tashigaon (2,100m/6890ft): 4-5 hours
    Trekking with Isuwa Khola and Kusuwa Khola on each side, we cross a wooden bridge over Isuwa Khola and pass several small villages and forests. After trekking for a couple of hours and crossing the bridge, we reach the Sherpa village of Tashigaon. The vista of the Himalayas is magnificent from Tashigaon. Overnight at a homestay.
  • Day 07: Trek from Tashigaon to Khongma Danda (3,500m/11,483 ft): 6-7 hours
    We may have a tough day today as we walk on steep trails on our way to Khongma Danda. We climb stone stairs and come across few lakes and fields filled with yaks, blue sheep, and other Himalayan cattle grazing in the field. Upon reaching Unshisa, we enter Makalu Barun National Park. After 7 hours of trek, we reach Khongma Danda. Overnight at a homestay in Khongma Danda.
  • Day 08: Acclimatization Day
    Acclimatize ourselves with high altitude, we take a break from trekking today.    Later, we can visit some nearby Buddhist monasteries and learn about Sherpa culture and ways of life from the locals people . Overnight in Khongma Danda.
  • Day 09: Trek from Khongma Danda to Dobate: 6-7 hours
    Today will be a tough day for us as we have to pass four passes to reach Dobate. We start with climbing over Kauma La Pass (3603m) and then head on to Keke La Pass (4127m). We further climb on to Shipton La pass (4170m), where we stumble across beautiful Kalo Pokhari Lake. Then, we trek for a couple of hours and pass Tutu La Pass (4080m) to finally reach Dobate. We relish the alluring view of Chamlang (7319m), Peak 6 (6524m), Peak 7 (6758m), and the other Himalayas from Dobate. Overnight at a lodge in Dobate.
  • Day 10: Trek from Dobate to Yangri Kharka (3,557m/11,670 ft): 6-7 hours
    Trekking through dense rhododendron forests, we cross Barun River and trek towards Yangri Kharka. On our way, we may come across yaks grazing in the field. The yaks are the chief transportation means in these regions. After 7 hours of trek, we reach Yangri Kharka. Overnight at a lodge.
  • Day 11: Trek from Yangri Kharka to Langmale Kharka: (4,410m/14,468ft): 5-6 hours
    We trek along the lush Himalayan forests and cross a couple of wooden bridges over small streams to reach Merek. Chasing the mesmerizing view of the Himalayas, we continue our trek walking on moraines and pass small Himalayan villages to reach Langmale Kharka. Overnight at a homestay.
  • Day 12: Trek from Langmale Kharka to Makalu Base Camp: (4,870m/15,978ft): 6-7 hours
    Climbing on a steep trail alongside Barun Nadi, we walk through icy glaciers and ridges to reach Shershong. We relish the beauty of Mt. Makalu (8481m) on our way to the base camp. We trek for an hour or two to finally reach Makalu Base Camp. The panorama of the Himalayas from the base camp is jaw-dropping. Overnight at Makalu Base Camp.
  • Day 13: Explore Makalu Base Camp
    Today, we explore the Makalu Base Camp vicinity with a superb panorama of Makalu from the south face, Everest (8848m), Lhotse (8516m), and the other Himalayas in eastern Nepal. We relish the beauty of the surrounding glaciers and glacial lakes. We can also hike a little up to Barun Glacier and make a side trip to the tranquil Barun Pokhari. Overnight at Makalu Base Camp.
  • Day 14: Trek from Makalu Base Camp to Yangri Kharka: 6-7 hours
    After our successful trek to Makalu Base Camp, we bid farewell to the base camp and descend to Yangri Kharka. Trekking through sparse forests along the rocky trails, we pass small villages of Shershong, Langmale Kharka, and Merek on our way to Yangri Kharka. Overnight at a lodge.
  • Day 15: Trek from Yangri Kharka to Dobate: 6-7 hours
    Trekking along free-flowing Barun River, we pass alpine forests, rocky ridges, and few small streams to finally reach Dobate. We relish the beauty of nature while descending to Dobate. On our way, we may come across some yaks, snow pigeons, and blue sheep. Overnight at a lodge in Dobate.
  • Day 16: Trek from Dobate to Khongma Danda: 5-6 hours
    Today, we leave Dobate for Khongma Danda. We trek along rhododendron, juniper, and fir forests to reach Mumbuk. From Mumbuk, we cross Tutu La Pass (4080m), Shipton La Pass (4170m), Keke La Pass (4127m), and Kauma La Pass (3603m) to finally reach Khongma Danda after 7 hours of trek. Overnight at a lodge.
  • Day 17: Trek from Khongma Danda to Tashigaon: 4-5 hours
    We trek through dense forests and pass few lakes on our way back to Tashigaon. Trekking along steep rocky trails, we exit Makalu Barun National Park as we trek for 5 hours to enter the beautiful Sherpa village of Tashigaon. Overnight at a lodge in Tashigaon.
  • Day 18: Trek from Tashigaon to Seduwa: 4-5 hours
    Trekking along small streams, we pass the isolated valley of the Barun River through small settlements. We trek with Isuwa Khola on one side and Hingsa Khola on the other side to reach Seduwa after 5 hours of trek. Overnight at a lodge in Seduwa.
  • Day 19: Trek from Seduwa to Num: 5-6 hours
    We trek across several dense rhododendron and bamboo forests and cross Arun River to exit Makalu Barun Conservation Area. We pass a small rural settlement of Sherpas on our way to Num. We then trek for a couple of hours to reach the Sherpa village of Num. Overnight at a lodge in Num.
  • Day 20: Trek from Num to Tumlingtar: 6-7 hours
    Today is the last day of our trek. We relish the joy of trekking along steep trials with the beautiful panorama of Mt. Makalu (8481m) for the last time before reaching Tumlingtar. After trekking for 7 hours, we reach Tumlingtar. Overnight at a lodge.
  • Day 21: Tumlingtar to Kathmandu: 50 mins flight
    After a successful trek, we fly back to the capital enjoying the beautiful aerial view of the mountains. Feel free to spend your leisure time as you please. Overnight at a hotel.
  • Day 22: Final Departure from Kathmandu
    We drop you off at Tribhuvan International Airport flight to destination.
